About Us
The Human Behind the AI Grounded in clinical science. Driven by empathy.
cooccurring.ai was founded and clinically guided by Felipe Tapia, SUDRC #23215.
As a registered Substance Use Disorder Counselor in California (CADTP), Felipe spent years watching a heartbreaking pattern: people suffering in silence because the fear of judgment, the weight of stigma, or the lack of total privacy kept them from asking for help. He built cooccurring.ai to serve as a safe, low-pressure starting line. While ACE is powered by artificial intelligence, its "heart" is programmed by a human counselor. Felipe personally trains and audits ACE’s conversational frameworks to ensure it adheres strictly to evidence-based practices like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing. His philosophy for the platform is simple: privacy is the prerequisite to honesty, and honesty is the first step toward health.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does stress affect substance use cravings?
Stress triggers the body's "fight or flight" response and releases cortisol. This reaction lowers impulse control and increases the brain's desire for the quick relief or numbing effect that substances previously provided, making cravings feel much more intense.
What is the difference between dual diagnosis and co-occurring disorders?
They mean the exact same thing. Both terms describe when a person experiences a mental health challenge (like depression or anxiety) and a substance use issue at the same time. "Co-occurring disorders" is simply the more modern, preferred clinical term.
Why do anxiety and alcohol use happen together so often?
People frequently use alcohol to temporarily calm their nervous system and quiet anxious thoughts—a pattern known as self-medication. However, as the alcohol wears off, the brain's chemistry rebounds, often causing anxiety spikes that are worse than the original symptoms.
How can I better understand the cycle of mood changes and addiction?
Mood changes and substance use feed into one another. A low, irritable, or anxious mood might prompt substance use for temporary relief. As the substance alters brain chemistry and wears off, it leads to deeper emotional crashes, which restarts the cycle of seeking relief.
What are some evidence-based coping strategies for trauma and stress?
Effective, non-clinical strategies include grounding techniques (like the 5-4-3-2-1 sensory method), deep breathing exercises to reset your nervous system, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) skills that help you identify and reframe distressing thought patterns.
Do you provide an anonymous mental health and wellness chat?
Yes. ACE is designed to be a completely private and anonymous space. We do not require accounts to chat, and we use in-memory processing—meaning your conversation data is never permanently stored, tracked, or tied to your identity.
How does a private AI tool for behavioral health education work?
Our AI tool, ACE, acts as an interactive, educational guide. It uses evidence-based frameworks to help you process your thoughts, recognize behavioral health patterns, and learn wellness strategies securely and at your own pace.
Is this a safe space to explore substance use habits online?
Absolutely. We built this platform specifically to remove the stigma and fear of judgment that often prevents people from seeking information. You can ask questions and reflect on your habits completely confidentially.
What do you mean by confidential, self-guided mental wellness exploration?
It means you are in the driver's seat of your journey. You choose exactly what topics to explore and when to engage. Our tool provides the structure and insights of evidence-based practices without the pressure or clinical environment of a formal intake process.
Will I receive non-judgmental support for co-occurring symptoms?
Yes. ACE is programmed with trauma-informed, empathetic frameworks like Motivational Interviewing. It is designed to listen, validate your experiences, and provide educational insights without any judgment, shame, or clinical labeling.
